"A group of friends went down to Sandy Island to learn more about the Gullah people. Our guide was excellent and a descendent from the Gullah people. We would highly recommend this tour and had a great time."

“Sandy Island is a must see - and captain Rommy is must hear! His accurate stories of the slavery that took place amongst the people of Sandy Island were difficult but important to hear. There is no whitewashing on this trip! Captain Rommy refers to the inhabitants of the island as his family and his ancestors who were much more than “slaves”. It is not a word you hear on the tour, which I found very profound as a white woman wanting to learn more. Captain Rommy was lighthearted, and fun. A real character! It was great to get a chance to purchase some items to support the Gullah people on Sandy Island, and support The Pyatt family. A tour to remember. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of this protected island dedicated to preserving culture. It was an honor.”

“This is a great opportunity to learn more about the Gullah people through the expertise of Captain Romey who is a native of the Island and your host on this tour. He is a gifted storyteller and will infuse you with much information/anecdotes about this little known people who survived and continue to survive many obstacles and pitfalls and who still hold steadfast to Gullah values and principals today. The tour is definitely recommended for those of us who love our American history and are curious to know things not recorded in our school textbooks and lectures! I so enjoyed it!”
